Oahu: Day 3

Beach!

And our first Portuguese Man o War sighting. At first, I thought it might be a Velella velella floating in our direction because of the color, but because we were in a tropical place I had made a deal with myself not to pick anything up. This decision also came after picking up the toxic newt in Olympic National Park a few months ago...

I scooped the small little guy onto one of our body boards and brought it up to the beach. I could tell it wasn't what I thought in the beginning, so I took a picture to look it up later. Terry and I then jumped back into the ocean - and luckily we didn't get stung. When I was reading about them later in the day I found out they usually don't travel alone. A "where you find one, you will find many"sort of rule.

Then...a rainstorm! This happened a few times while we were in Hawaii. It was a lot like living in Florida in the summer where enormous lightning and downpours would happen daily around 2 pm. Except in Hawaii the rainstorms are not reliable. Terry ran outside to grab our dry beach clothes and towels at 6 am, 1 pm, and 11 pm and I had to keep remembering if I had rolled the windows up in the ghetto Impala.

Around 5 pm, after watching the Seahawks roll over the Packers we headed out for a lighthouse hike. We passed the pull off for the hike the day before on our tour of the island and wanted to catch it at sunset. To get to the Makapuu lighthouse is pretty easy. There is free parking at the bottom of the hill and the trail is paved as it winds about a mile through the hills and around to the southeastern tip of Oahu. The view was incredible.

I almost walked face first into a spider the size of my fist.

And that concludes our third day on the island!
